  4.     Ever since January, when an FBI probe of shady trading
  5. practices rocked Chicago's commodities pits, members of New
  6. York City's markets have wondered when the spotlight would be
  7. turned on them. Last week the waiting was over. On Thursday
  8. morning U.S. postal inspectors and officials of the Commodity
  9. Futures Trading Commission, the federal agency that regulates
  10. the pits, raided four of New York's five commodities exchanges.
  11. The Feds combed through records and served subpoenas on at least
  12. a dozen individuals in a search for evidence of suspected
  13. criminal and civil violations by an estimated 50 traders.

  15.     While the New York and Chicago probes are being handled by
  16. two different collaborations of Government agencies, the groups
  17. are looking for many of the same kinds of illicit trading
  18. techniques. One tactic believed to be under investigation is
  19. "front running," in which traders assure profits by executing
  20. trades for their own accounts before they carry out their
  21. customers' orders.
